Janesville/Beloit, Wisconsin. . . . YWCA Rock County will host three “Stand Against Racism” events on Thursday, April 25. “Stand Against Racism” is a signature campaign of YWCA USA to build community among those who work for racial justice and to raise awareness about the negative impact of institutional and structural racism in our communities. The 2019 theme for the YWCA USA sanctioned event is No Hate. No Fear. Immigrant Justice is Racial Justice.
The Stand Against Racism event in Beloit is at The Harry C Moore Pavilion, located in Riverside Park at 1240 Riverside Drive. The Rock County Courthouse Steps are the Janesville location for the “Stand Against Racism” event. The event takes place from 12:00 noon to 12:30 p.m. at both locations.
There will multiple brief speakers at each location sharing their stories of immigration, including Heydi Medrano Ramos, a Parker High School student, Alejandra Godina-Guajardo, and Dr.Joy Ngobi will speak in Janesville. Karen Soto, a Beloit Memorial High School student, María Encarnación, and Daksha Howard from Beloit College will speak in Beloit.
Both events will also feature a reading of the “Stand Against Racism” pledge. A large poster with the pledge imprinted is available for guests to sign, in addition to the distribution of wristbands and “Stand Against Racism” pins.
The third location is at the YWCA Rock County Child Care Center located at 1735 S. Washington Street in Janesville. Lisa Peternel, YWCA Rock County Child Care Program Director, with staff, will lead the P4J students in the youth version of the “Stand Against Racism” pledge from 11:00 am to 11:30 am. The event for staff and students takes place inside the classroom.
All of the city councils and village boards in Rock County, the Rock County Board of Supervisors, as well as the Wisconsin Towns Association – Rock County Unit, have recognized April 25 as Stand Against Racism Day in Rock County.
