Cecilia Gillhouse

Cecilia A. Gillhouse is a survivor, advocate, and community leader whose life and work are grounded in resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to justice for immigrant women and families across Wisconsin.

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cecilia immigrated to Madison, Wisconsin, in 2001 at the age of nineteen with her infant son and her parents, seeking safety after leaving a severely abusive relationship. What began as a moment of survival became the foundation of a life dedicated to ensuring that other women facing violence, isolation, and fear are not alone.

As a young single mother and primary provider, Cecilia balanced multiple jobs while learning English and supporting her Spanish-speaking parents through their own immigration journey. Through free English classes, long workdays, and the strength of community, she rebuilt her life—an experience that continues to shape her trauma-informed, survivor-centered approach to leadership.

Cecilia’s advocacy journey began in 2005 with UNIDOS Against Domestic Violence, first as a volunteer and later as a bilingual advocate. In 2010, at just twenty-eight years old, she was appointed Executive Director during a time of organizational crisis. Through collaborative leadership and strong community partnerships, she helped stabilize and strengthen the organization’s statewide impact, expanding access to safety and resources for Latina survivors.

In 2014, Cecilia joined MMG Law LLC, where she now serves as Chief Operating Officer and co-owner. She continues to advance trauma-informed legal services for immigrant survivors seeking safety, stability, and lawful pathways to remain in the United States.

In 2020, Cecilia survived a serious stroke during the COVID-19 pandemic. After months of rehabilitation, she returned to her work with renewed clarity and purpose, reaffirming her belief in resilience, community care, and collective healing.

Recognized with honors including the Unsung Hero Award, the Phoenix Award, and the Sally Sunde Award, Cecilia remains deeply committed to uplifting women, honoring survivor voices, and building communities where dignity, safety, and hope are possible for all.
