2026 MLK Commemoration
YWCA Rock County is proud to announce the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King and his enduring impact on justice and equality. The event will take place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Blackhawk Technical College Conference Center, located at 6004 S. County Road G, Janesville.
This year’s program will feature keynote speaker Honorable/Reverend Everett Mitchell of Dane County, who will share insights on the theme, “The Dream Lives Through Us,” and explore how Dr. King’s vision continues to shape today’s efforts for equity and justice. Judge Mitchell, an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School, teaches courses on “Race, Racism and the Law” and “Foundational Principles of the Juvenile Justice System.” His work focuses on dismantling the child welfare-to-juvenile delinquency-to-adult prison pipeline, a mission highlighted in the Wisconsin Public Television series “Not Enough Apologies: Trauma Stories.”
As a trauma survivor himself, Judge Mitchell brings a unique perspective to his role, ensuring that the court system does not perpetuate cycles of harm. He often reminds youth in his courtroom, “I am not your judge, I am your reflection.” His message underscores the belief in the transformative power of communities and the potential of every child.
This annual event is made possible through the collaboration of community partners, including: American Association of University Women (AAUW), United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 95, Blackhawk Technical College, the Kolste Family, Diversity Action Team of Rock County, NAACP Beloit Branch, School District of Beloit, School District of Janesville, Viruoso’s Mind Inc., and YWCA Rock County.
Join Us! Celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and engage in meaningful dialogue about justice and equality. This event is free and open to the public.
